Well, that's a deep subject
Years ago, I learned a joke that rises to the level that we Minnesotans label “pretty good.”
Imagine two people having a conversation about nothing of any importance whatsoever. For our purposes, they’re discussing the various types of potatoes harvested in Finland. Nothing remarkable, right?
After a few minutes or so the conversation kind of dies down, and one of the people who’ve been talking just says, “Well…”
Then after a few seconds, the other person will say, “That’s a deep subject.”
The other person says, “What’s a deep subject?”
“A well.”
And that’s the joke.
We Minnesotans have low standards when it comes to labeling a joke “pretty good.”
At any rate, about 20 years ago I was visiting my grandparents and was able to use this joke. I don’t remember exactly what we were talking about, but it had to do with condors in Nevada.
So we hit the lull in conversation, and my grandfather said, “Well…”
Ever attentive, I said, “That’s a deep subject.”
Silence.
After a few seconds, my grandfather said, “Well, it’s really as deep as you want it to be. I mean, if you think about it, condors have had a pretty tough time…”
So I interrupted him, explained the joke and we all had a good laugh about it.
Now fast forward 20 years and I’ve just started this new YouTube channel I’ve mentioned a few times recently.
It’s a radical change from stuff I’ve published in the past, music, trumpet and such. So I want a name for it that is catchy and has some personal meaning as well.
After a good deal of thought and brainstorming, I remembered that story and realized it’s not a bad name for a podcast, especially since the topics on it tend to be legitimately deep.
And it’s nice to have that personal connection as well with my grandfather who’s recently passed away.
So as of a couple weeks ago, that’s the name of my audio podcast feed. The YouTube channel itself has several playlists, but I just put everything on the audio feed to keep things simple.
Here’s the link to the podcast on my Substack, and it’s also searchable on Apple and Spotify.
